YOU WILL NEED:
Silky woven fabric (like satin, silk, or lightweight viscose)
Measuring tape or ruler
Iron and pressing cloth (optional but recommended for delicate fabric)
Matching thread
Sewing machine or hand needle
NOTES
This project works best with lightweight, drapey fabrics that have a soft sheen. Take your time when pressing and sewing the edges, the neater your folds, the more professional your finish will look.
CUTTING YOUR FABRIC
Step #1
Cut a perfect square measuring 60cm x 60cm. You can adjust the size if you’d like a smaller neck tie or a larger headscarf, just keep it square.
SEWING YOUR EDGES
Step #2
Starting on one side of your square, fold the raw edge up by 1cm and press with your iron. Then fold it again by another 1cm to encase the raw edge neatly. Press again to hold the fold in place.
Step #3
Sew close to the inner fold using a straight stitch, keeping your edge neat and even as you go.
Step #4
Repeat this process on the opposite side of your fabric, fold up 1cm, then again by 1cm, press, and sew close to the fold.
Step #5
Now move onto the remaining two raw edges, repeating the same folding, pressing, and sewing steps until all four edges are hemmed.
Step #6
Give your finished neckerchief a final press to smooth out the seams and add a crisp finish. You’re done!
You’ve just made a beautiful silky neckerchief from scratch - no pattern required. Perfect for tying around your neck, styling in your hair, or adding to your favourite bag for a little handmade touch. Don’t forget to share your makes with me @sewingwitholive 💛
