Create a beautiful envelope cushion cover in under an hour! This beginner-friendly sewing project is a great way to refresh your home décor without zips, buttons, or complicated techniques.

Using just a few simple measurements, you can make a custom cushion cover to fit any cushion insert perfectly.

YOU WILL NEED

• Cushion insert

• Woven fabric (cotton, linen, canvas, or home décor fabric)

• Matching thread

• Fabric scissors or rotary cutter

• Pins or clips

• Sewing machine

NOTES

The seam allowance is 1cm unless otherwise stated.

This tutorial creates an envelope-style cushion cover, meaning there are no zips or fastenings required. The overlapping back panels allow you to easily remove the cushion cover for washing.

MEASURING & CUTTING

Step #1

Measure the cushion insert you would like to make a cover for.

For example, if your cushion measures 20.5 inches (52cm) square, your front cushion piece will be cut to exactly the same measurement.

Cut:

1 Front Piece

• 20.5 inches x 20.5 inches (52cm x 52cm)

  
  

Step #2

To create the back of the cushion cover, add 6 inches (15cm) to your original cushion measurement.

Using our example:

20.5 inches + 6 inches = 26.5 inches

Cut one rectangle measuring:

20.5 inches x 26.5 inches(52cm x 67cm)

Step #3

Cut this rectangle in half to create two back pieces.

You will now have:

2 Back Rectangles

• 20.5 inches x 13.25 inches(52cm x 33.5cm)

These pieces will overlap to form the envelope opening on the back of the cushion.

SEWING THE BACK PANELS

Step #4

On one long edge of each back rectangle, fold the raw edge over by 1cm and press.

Fold it over by another 1cm and press again to create a neat double-fold hem.

Step #5

Sew close to the inner folded edge on both back pieces.

These finished edges will form the opening of your envelope cushion cover.

ASSEMBLING THE CUSHION COVER

Step #6

Place your front cushion piece right side up on your work surface.

Step #7

Place the first back rectangle on top with right sides together, aligning the raw edges.

Step #8

Place the second back rectangle on top, again with right sides together, overlapping the first rectangle in the centre.

Pin or clip all the way around the outer edges.

Step #9

Sew around all four sides using a 1cm seam allowance, securing the front and back pieces together.

Step #10

Trim the seam allowance at each corner, being careful not to cut through your stitching.

This helps reduce bulk and creates crisp corners when turned.

FINISHING

Step #11

Turn the cushion cover right side out through the envelope opening.

Use a point turner, knitting needle, or similar tool to gently push out the corners.

Step #12

Give your cushion cover a final press and insert your cushion pad.

You're done!
